1991 - Women's Events
In 1991 the IOC (international olympic committee) decided that any new sport seeking to be included in the olympic program had to include women's events.
Julia Leventhal, a collegiate athlete, says she is not surprised by the fact that women's sports were not required to equal men's sports until 1991. She references large social movements such as the feminist movement and the civil rights movement. She claims that these movements need extreme support and awareness before it reaches the sports legislations. However, Jessica Andrews is extremely surprised by the fact that it took until 1991. She seems to feel as if the feminist movement and women's rights had progressed a lot faster than they had.
I think both of these reactions are extremely valuable and interesting to analyze. Jules believes that movements take a long time to progress and enact legislation so she isn't surprised by the recent date. I agree that it is important to have patience with these issues as they are a marathon of a fight and not a sprint, however, Jessica also has a strong point. The feminist movement is far along enough that this should have been assumed much earlier than 1991. We must not get complacent with the social climate of the country and must strive for progress. I applaud both of these answers and believe they both have extreme merit.
